About

The Centre for Late Antique Studies at the University of St Andrews brings together researchers and students interested in different aspects of this period – from archaeology to religion, from political history to literature – based at different Schools across the University.

Our aims are:

  • to further the study of late antique history, archaeology, literature and religion;
  • to promote collaborative work between the many scholars from different academic schools within the University;
  • to stimulate the development of interdisciplinary approaches;
  • to break down the boundaries between chronological and linguistic specialisms;
  • to publicize initiatives in the field of late antique studies in St Andrews, among members of the University and the wider public;
  • to foster collaborations with colleagues and institutions in other universities;

The centre is based at the School of Classics, and it counts among its members and collaborators scholars based in the Schools of History, Divinity, and Modern Languages. The centre is coordinated by a committee, with a director (Dr. Carlos Machado, Classics), an assistant director (Dr Anne-Sophie Schoess, Classics), representatives of the School of History (Dr. Alex Woolf) and Divinity (Prof. Mark Elliot), and an outreach officer.
